Camp 2029 is an early warning for a dark future we must work to avoid. It depicts a fictional scenario of humanitarian work and learning in the year 2029. In this future, what likely began as a series of well-intentioned pivots to make humanitarian programs more sustainable comes together to create a scenario of desperation in this refugee camp. Participant participants embody the roles of refugee and aid worker as they navigate the automated systems around them. The experience is not optimistic—we hope it will provoke people to think deeply about the potential unexpected side effects of today's innovations, and work to create a future with opportunity, empowerment, and security for all people.
